Ventilation is another area of kitchen tech that has seen big changes. Not all venting has to come down from the ceiling. New, modern kitchen vents like this one from Jenn-Air are retractable, disappearing into the countertop when you aren’t cooking. This one also has integrated illumination, which improves visibility for working at the cooktop. This style of vent is an excellent kitchen design idea when the goal is a sleek or minimalist space with few protrusions or appliances to break up the sightlines.
Of course, in order to be able to accurately compare freestanding kitchen cabinets with anything else we first need to understand what they are. The best way to describe them is as being base cabinets with legs. A base cabinet sits on the floor and provides a base for other kitchen-related elements. Its freestanding version is more or less the same thing but completely elevated from the floor.
If you don’t like the pointy shape of the blind corner pull-outs we just showed you, there are alternatives and a lot of them avoid those 90 degree angles in favor of a more cohesive and fluid design. This eclectic kitchen shows just how practical this design direction can be. This diagonal cabinet includes drawers at the bottom, room for the microwave oven other small appliances above the counter and some open space at the top. There’s even some counter space left too.
Gone are the days when appliances were only available as black, white or stainless steel to fit into a mandatory neutral kitchen palette. Today’s newest appliances and cabinetry come in a host of hues to enliven your kitchen and bring life to this heavily used space.
