Nowadays freestanding cabinets are so rarely seen in kitchens that when they do appear they look unusual, unnatural and intriguing. There was a time, however, when everything in the kitchen was free and movable and that included both appliances and furniture, the only exception being the sink. In the 1940s, however, came a period when freestanding kitchen cabinets were considered highly impractical and out of fashion and when the style we now consider conventional was favored.
